Songs As Sermons: It Starts With Me

It starts with me.

Blame shifting is the first response to the very first sin. In the Garden we see sin enter the story and we see Eve blame the serpent, then we see Adam blame Eve. It is always easier to ignore our responsibility to own our sin, whether communal or personal.

It starts with me is a declaration of responsibility.

Jesus shares this crazy parable about how it starts with us. In short, there will be a day that we stand before a throne and are judged. Interestingly enough, there isn’t a doctrinal exam that determines who is in or out. It isn’t based on your view of the creation story, LGBT community, Biblical Inerrancy, or any other theological position.

Instead, Jesus shares how the ones who fed the hungry, gave something to drink to the thirsty, invited in the stranger, clothed those who needed clothes, looked after the sick, and visited those in prison were invited in. And the reasoning for this is because they did this to Jesus. Of course, they are stunned. They are like when, we never saw you there when we did those things. Jesus says, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:40)

I won’t get into what happens to the other group. You can read the rest of Matthew 25 if you’d like.

The reality is that Jesus even tells us that it starts with us. We are called to serve others.

May you come to know that it starts with you.
May you serve with self-sacrificial love in the way of Jesus.
May you find that in serving humanity you are actually serving God, because all of humanity bears the image of God.

Take a step back! How can this be?
So much begging and pleadin’ with no one listenin’
Take a breath now and think of what this really means!
This is my understandin’!
That the life I lead does not belong to me!

It starts with me (oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
It starts with me (oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
It starts with me (oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
It starts with me (oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)

In a world where doin’ what’s right
Has been pushed from the mind
And forced underground
Into back alleys, and places of abandon
What choice do we have?
Tell me! What choice do we have?
What choice do I have?!
What choice do I have?!
But to force my own hand!

Each human being, it doesn’t matter
whether he’s a Politician, or a business man or a…
Just an ordinary person like me, in the street
We should all begin, as a human being to realize the enormous
Suffering, misery, confusion there is in the world
And it’s our responsibility to change that
